Die Rai wohnen v. a. in Ost-Nepal (etwa 330 000) sowie als Zugewanderte in Bhutan (20 000) und Indien (mehr als 100 000, v. a. in Sikkim und West Bengal). In ihrer Religion mischen sich buddhistisch-lamaistische mit hinduistischen und animistischen Elementen.
